Beirut Art Center
Overview:
The Beirut Art Center is a new non-commercial association and platform dedicated to contemporary art in Lebanon, initiated by Lamia Joreige (artist) and Sandra Dagher (curator and director of Gallery Espace SD until its closing in 2007).
This center aims to produce, present and promote local and international contemporary artistic and cultural works in Beirut throughout the year.
This Center which is established on an unprecedented scale in Beirut, is considered a public space capable of providing artworks to a wide and growing audience, residents and visitors alike, who have the opportunity to access to a rich and diverse collection of contemporary art and cultural practices.
Architectural Description:
The center is located in an industrial area easily accessible to visitors from all parts of the city, and occupies a separate building of 1500 m2 divided on two floors, designed by the architect "Raed Abi Al-Lama'".
In addition to the exhibition space, the Beirut Art Center includes a hall for watching films and performances, a multimedia library, and a hall for selling books and art magazines.
Beirut Art Center will organize regular activities such as seminars, film screenings and performances, workshops, and concerts.
Beirut Art Center's inaugural exhibition includes artworks drawn from personal and intimate stories that reflect common and unique experiences that are familiar, unprecedented, public and highly private.
Participating artists: Jenan El Ani, Tony Chaker, Antoine Dagata, Mona Hatoum, Emily Jacir, Gil Majid, Anri Sala, Lina Sanea, Lisa Steele, Akram Zaatari, Cynthia Zaven.
