MIM Mineral Museum
Overview:
• “Mim” is the twenty-fourth letter of the Arabic alphabet, and it is the first letter of the words museum, mineral and mine, as it is the title of the aesthetic edifice associated with science and knowledge in Beirut, specifically in the Campus of Innovation and Sports, Saint Joseph University (Damascus Road).
• The Mim Museum is unprecedented in the region in terms of its subject matter, content, and method of presentation supported by modern means and multiple technological media.
Historic overview:
• The story of the birth of this museum dates back to the passion of the engineer “Saleem Eddeh” for distinctively shaped stones. Collecting these stones took years of follow-up and work, and Eddeh bought them from more than 63 countries from five continents. He began collecting stones in the year 1997 AD, and in the year 2004 AD he decided to share what he had studied and collected with the people, and built a museum for that. He was inspired by what exists in France, as each university or higher education institution has its own museum. This is natural because mineralogy began there in the nineteenth century and they were able to collect many things, so he chose Saint Joseph University because he studied there, and because it is an ancient university that is more than 135 years old.
Architectural Description:
• The Mim Museum is unique in being an interactive museum, its halls are equipped with touch screens that present information in an interesting and non-boring way. It is also distinguished by presenting the Arabic language over English and French in providing explanations and information. Eddeh was keen on this, considering that Lebanon is an Arab country and its language is Arabic, so the name, slogan and symbol were all in Arabic, thus the name “Mim” was born.
• It is also equipped to receive specialized conferences, jewellery exhibitions and other cultural and scientific activities.
• The museum's goal is to be an open area for everyone, and the invitation is directed to Arab visitors and students to discover the beauties of nature through these stones.
