Ethnographic Museum

Overview:

• The Ethnographic Museum of the city of "Chefchaouen" is located in the historical Kasbah in the "Wata El Hammam" square, where it occupies the northwest corner of this archaeological landmark.

Historic overview:

• The museum, which was inaugurated in 1985, occupies a privileged location within the walls of the Kasbah, which is composed of several architectural landmarks and an Andalusian-style garden that extends over an area of more than 2000 square meters.

• The museum also occupies a special place in the history of the city, as it occupies a historic building that has been restored and prepared for this purpose.

• It reflects five centuries of civilizational and cultural interaction between the local tribal groups, Jabala/Ghamra, and the Andalusian and Jewish elements that have populated and settled the city since its inception in the last quarter of the fifteenth century.

Architectural Description:

• The museum which consists of two main halls in the middle of them is a foyer around which some side spaces are organized, displays museum collections and art pieces representing the material culture of the city and its rural surroundings of the main tribes in the province of Chefchaouen: Al Khammas, Ghazawa, Ghamra.

• These groups also reflected the handicraft skills traded in the city, such as weaving, silversmithing, jewelry, leather tanning, embroidery, pottery making, etc.
