Assounna Mosque

As-Sunna Mosque

Overview:

The "As-Sunna Mosque" is a distinguished religious historical landmark, and it is one of the six mosques built by Sultan "Sidi Muhammad bin Abdullah" in Jumada al-Awwal in 1199 AH corresponding to March 1785 AD.

The As-Sunna Mosque embraces the lessons of "academic chairs" supervised by the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs.

It is one of the most important mosques that attract a large number of worshippers from the capital and its suburbs during "Tarawih" prayers in the blessed month of Ramadan.

This mosque is one of the largest mosques in Morocco, and it is only surpassed in size by (Hassan Mosque and Al Qarawiyyin Mosque).

Architectural Description:

The mosque has an area of 5565 square meters and has six gates. As for the mosque’s yard, it is larger than the courtyard (sahn).

The unique geometrical shape of the "Assounna Mosque" was similar to that of the "Lalla Aouda" mosque in Meknes. However, the partial changes that occurred in the external structure made the mosque a field of experiments for advanced traditional industry, which added to this landmark an artistic aesthetic and a balanced and attractive geometric shape.
