Bab El Had
Overview:
"Bab El Ahad" or "Bab El Had", as it is commonly called by Moroccans, is one of the gates of the Almohad Wall.
It is one of the most famous gates of Rabat, located in downtown, and it is one of the main outlets to the "Souika", a popular market in the Old City, where there are shops specializing in selling all kinds of goods, including food, vegetables and fruits, clothes, and popular restaurants that serve traditional dishes of various kinds.
The gate is archaeological, and whose construction dates back to the era of the Almohad state, which took care of fortifying Moroccan cities with walls, towers and gates, including the city of Rabat, which surrounded it with a wall called now the "Almohad Wall" surrounding most of the city.
It was restored and renewed by Sultan "Moulay Suleiman Alaoui" in the nineteenth century AD, and a weekly market was established in front of it to be held on Sundays, and after its name the square was called in our time, and before that, the square was a place for animals and carriages coming from Rabat.
In the engraving of "Bab El Had", the following historical phrase was written: Praise be to Allah, this happy gate was renewed by the Commander of the believers, Mawlana Suleiman in 1229 AH
Despite its historical value, the gate was neglected before it benefited from a vast restoration process that brought it into consideration again. The grounds of the square adjacent to the gate were prepared, lighting poles were erected, palm trees were planted, and two fountains were constructed in the middle of the square, making it a destination for families as a picnic space, and a place for children to play.
