Overview:
A Private Orthodox educational institution, operating under the guardianship of the Metropolitan of Beirut and its Greek Orthodox dependencies.
Zahret Al-Ihsan School is located inside “Saint Catherine” monastery, which is located in Achrafieh district in Beirut.
Architectural description:
The monastery and the school were built in the late nineteenth century on a sparsely populated hill located to the east of Beirut and overlooking the old city.
Zahret Al-Ihsan School is reached through the street that bears its name and is adjacent to the west of the “Saint Catherine” monastery.
Historic overview:
The credit for establishing this institute goes to a young woman named "Labiba Ibrahim Jahshan" who belongs to an ancient Beirut family living in Gemmayzeh.
Zahret Al Ihsan School was established on August 13, 1881, thanks to the cooperation of this new association headed by Mrs. Zarifa Sursock with Sister Maryam (Jahshan), to be the first orthodox institute for females in Lebanon at the beginning of the twentieth century to teach Arabic, French, English and the principles of Greek and Russian.
The school was initially intended for females, but later, like many Lebanese educational institutions, it was transformed into a mixed school in 1974. It receives “male and female” students without any racial, religious or sectarian discrimination.
The approved educational programs in the primary, complementary and secondary grades include Orthodox religious education supervised and implemented by priests from the Orthodox Archdiocese of Beirut.
