Arts and Crafts Technical School

Overview:

A historical school built by Midhat Pasha, the Ottoman governor, at the beginning of the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid.

Its goal was to provide learning opportunities and to accommodate young people who do not have a job, and the area surrounding the school in Beirut was called the Sanayeh area, and today it is the Faculty of Law of the Lebanese University.

Architectural description:

The facility included four adjacent buildings: the school, the charitable clinic, the mosque, which turned into Radio Lebanon, and the garden known today as Sanayeh Park.

Historic overview:

It is the first school of crafts and arts in Beirut, established by Medhat Pasha for his passion for construction and advancement and the main building was inside the wall of the old city of Beirut.

The school was neglected with the death of Midhat Pasha in 1883 AD. In 1898, Rashid Pasha, the Ottoman governor, issued a decision to establish a new Sanayeh school, but the implementation of the decision was delayed until 1905 AD. Then the governor Khalil Khaled Pasha issued an order to build a school building called “Sanayeh Maktabi Si”.

In the beginning, education in it was limited to limited specializations, such as carpentry, blacksmithing, textiles and shoes industry, and all of which were simple handicraft. In the 1960s, the vocational and technical education had developed, and several schools were established in the five governorates.
