Saint Elias Roman Catholic Cathedral
Overview:
In 1849, Archbishop Agapios Riachy, Metropolitan of Beirut for the Roman Catholics, built the "Saint Elias Cathedral".
Architectural description:
The cathedral combines the harmony of Byzantine architecture and the splendour of oriental decoration, modern with its graceful sharp arches, shining with its ceiling windows, luxurious with its ornaments and cladding.
Historic overview:
It was destroyed by the events of the war in Lebanon, so the diocese restored it in 1994 in order to work on restoring its noble splendour, its spiritual service, and the gathering its faithful believers in its position, mission and future.
It is noteworthy that the rehabilitation work began in late 2003 and ended in 2006.
