El Barani Mosque
Overview:
El Barani Mosque at Bab al-Jadid in Upper Casbah was named this name because it is located outside Casbah of the Ottoman Sultan, considering that residents outside the city of Algiers was called al-Baraniyah as a plural of al-Barani.
El Barani Mosque, located outside the wall of the castle of Casbah, was built during the Ottoman rule in 1653 AD in order to enable foreign worshipers from the castle to worship in it.
The designation of the El-Barani Mosque is a term used to differentiate between the inner Casbah Mosque and the outer Casbah El-Barani Mosque, and we often find Barani groups that used to pray in this mosque because they could not enter to pray inside the Castle Mosque due to security conditions.
It is said that this mosque was built by Hussein Dey, and it is evident from the memorial tablets found in it, which explicitly mention the name of Hussein Dey, but researchers say that this mosque was built before the reign of Hussein Dey, who only renovated it, and when it was established in 1653 AD, it was a small and elegant mosque located in front of Casbah new Gate.
