Historic overview
Archaeological studies of the region have revealed that the territory of Tbilisi was settled by humans as early as the 4th millennium BC. The fortress was considerably expanded by the Umayyad Caliphate in the 7th century, while the Mongols took over the fortress in the 12 century. The Mongols also named it the "Narin Qala'' which means Little Fortress.
