New Mosque (Yeni Camii)

Overview:

• It is one of the famous historical mosques in Turkey, specifically in Istanbul.

• It is distinguished by its unique Ottoman architecture and its location near the sea and Galata Bridge.

Historic overview:

• The mosque was built by order of Safiye, mother of Sultan Mehmed III and wife of Sultan Murad III.

• It was completed in 1663 by order of Turhan Hatice, the mother of Muhammad IV.

Architectural description:

• The “Yeni Mosque” complex includes the following main sections: the mosque, the market, the mausoleum and the Sultan’s Palace.

• We see that the construction of the mosque was influenced by the “Sheikh Dawood Pasha” mosque because it was designed by “Dawood Agha,” the student of architect Sinan.

• The roof of the mosque is surrounded by a main dome, which is surrounded by four semi-domes of the same diameter, in addition to a group of small domes of different diameters.

• Around the mosque’s courtyard, which contains two minarets, each with three balconies and twenty-two domes, there are three entrances from three different sides, and in the middle of the courtyard there is a fountain.

• The mausoleum contains the sarcophagus of the sultan’s mother and the mausoleums of five sultans. It can be identified by the turban and the feathers of the heron. The view at night across the Golden Horn Bay shows the picturesque appearance of the crowded eastern neighborhood rising on the banks.
