Efreeha Archaeological Site

Overview:

Efreeha: Eastern and Western: an archaeological area in the north, relative to the Efreeha family of Bin Ali family, and there is a castle called Efreeha Castle.

Efreeha is a small, deserted town located on a shallow bay, about five kilometres north of Al-Zubarah. Current excavations and research indicate that the town dates back to the early eighteenth century until the mid-nineteenth century, when it was evacuated. This means, that Efreeha existed before the city of Al Zubarah, and it may have been evacuated when this new city was established. The settlement appears to have taken different shapes and sizes over time, growing at times and declining at other times. These changes in wealth and population were reflected in the buildings, as they had known as occasional evictions and frequent redesigns.

The Efreeha Castle is located in the center of the site, and it is a square-shaped building with a side length of 45 meters, with defensive walls and corner towers. Not far from the castle, on the beach, lie the ruins of a mosque built in the traditional Qatari style. Fishing was important to the inhabitants of Efreeha, as many fish bones were recovered and stone fisheries were still preserved in the sea.
