Medieval Murwab

Overview:

Murwab is considered the only large Islamic settlement in Qatar that dates back to the Middle Ages and which is not located on the coast, and includes about two hundred housing units built in the form of groups, residential palace, workshops and two mosques, and the excavations also revealed a group of graves scattered around the houses.

It is also known that Murwab Palace is the oldest Islamic palace that was discovered in Qatar. The foundations of the walls that were revealed overlapping each other showed that the palace was rebuilt in the same place, but by reducing the size of the previous structure. The structure of the semi-rectangular palace resembles the well-known Umayyad and Abbasid residential palaces in Iraq, Syria and Iran. The structure, with the remaining walls, was restored to a height of one meter in 1985.

Field research and comparative studies of archaeological objects such as coins and pottery that were found at the site of Murwab indicate that the site was established in the early Abbasid era (9th century AD), and that it was settled for a period of no less than a century. This makes Murwab an exceptional site indicative of the material culture of the Abbasid era, and it also makes it a unique site for the Abbasid era in the Gulf region.
