• He is one of the sons of Abu Sufyan bin Harb and the first caliph of the Umayyad dynasty.

His birth:

• He was born five years before the prophetic mission, and it was said seven, and it was said thirteen, and his father and mother expected for him a great future since his childhood.

His life:

• It was said that he and his father, mother and brother Yazid embraced Islam on the day of the conquest of Mecca, and it was said that he converted to Islam before the conquest and kept concealing his conversion to Islam until the year of the conquest.

• He was the ruler of the Levant at the time of the caliphate of “Othman bin Affan” and after the incident of the killing of Othman, “Ali bin Abi Talib” became the caliph after him, so Muawiyah fought him until Ali was killed by “Ibn Muljam” and then “Al-Hassan bin Ali” ceded the caliphate to Muawiyah according to a covenant between them. Muawiyah established the Umayyad state, took Damascus as his capital, and took the pledge of allegiance to his son Yazid shortly before his death.

• He assumed the leadership of an army supplying his brother the companion "Yazid bin Abi Sufyan" in the caliphate of "Abu Bakr", and "Abu Bakr" ordered him to join him, so he was an invader under the command of his brother, and he fought the apostates in the battle of Al-Yamamah. After that, the Caliph “Abu Bakr” sent him with his brother Yazid to conquer the Levant, and he was with him on the day of the conquest of Sidon, Irqah, Jabal and Beirut, which are from the coasts of Levant.

• Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan assumed the state of Jordan in the Levant in the year 21 AH during the era of Omar bin Al-Khattab.

• After the death of his brother "Yazid bin Abi Sufyan" from the plague of Emmaus, and "Omar bin Al-Khattab" appointed him the governor of Damascus and all of the country attached to it, then the Caliph "Othman Bin Affan" gathered for him the whole province of Levant, and he was one of the governors of its cities.

• After the death of "Othman bin Affan" in the year 35 AH, he called for taking revenge on the killers of the Caliph, "Othman bin Affan".

His death:

• Among the graves of a number of companions, Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan, founder of the Umayyad dynasty, was buried near them.

• There is a monument built in the Ayyubid period that is believed to be the tomb of Caliph Muawiyah, founder of the Umayyad state, but many believe that the real grave of the Umayyad Caliph is located in another shrine in the cemetery of Al-Bab Al-Saghir in the southern corner of the Ahl al-Bayt cemetery in “Turbah Al-Jarrah” in Al-Qaimarryeh, Al-Naqshat Street, Damascus, Syria.
