• He was the ruler of the Levant at the time of the caliphate of “Othman bin Affan” and after the incident of the killing of Othman, “Ali bin Abi Talib” became the caliph after him, so Muawiyah fought him until Ali was killed by “Ibn Muljam” and then “Al-Hassan bin Ali” ceded the caliphate to Muawiyah according to a covenant between them. Muawiyah established the Umayyad state, took Damascus as his capital, and took the pledge of allegiance to his son Yazid shortly before his death.

• He assumed the leadership of an army supplying his brother the companion "Yazid bin Abi Sufyan" in the caliphate of "Abu Bakr", and "Abu Bakr" ordered him to join him, so he was an invader under the command of his brother, and he fought the apostates in the battle of Al-Yamamah.
