Al Badriyah School (The Grave of Prince Badr Al-Din)

Overview:

• The Badriya School is located in the city of Damascus, Abu Jarash area. It was at the Kahil Bridge that connects the two banks of the Tora River. It is now in the middle of the park of Hittin (Almesat Square), and at the intersection of Omar Ibn Al-Khattab and Oqba Ibn Nafeh Streets, to the north of the Shibliah and Al-Hafezia schools.

Historic overview:

• It is an Ayyubid building that was established by Prince Badr al-Din Hassan bin al-Dayah, known as Bilal or Lulu (meaning the polite), in the second half of the 6th century AH / 12 AD, that is, around the year 740 AH / 1339 AD.

• It was attached to Shibliya, and Sheikh "Shams al-Din Sibt Ibn al-Jawzi Yusuf" was the one in charge of teaching in the two schools, as al-Shibliah was in the mountain before it was joined to al-Badriya, in the year 654 AH.

• Only the grave remains, which is said to be 800 years old, and its dome fell. The Antiquities Authority restored it, then it became the headquarters of the Environment and Sustainable Development Association after its rehabilitation in the year 1425 AH / 2005 AD.

Architectural description:

• The grave is square, its four facades are identical and built of limestone of large size in its corners and around the openings, and the rest of its parts were covered with traditional plaster and white paint. In the middle of each facade is a rectangular window with a straight architrave, topped by a stone arch. All the facades are topped by by a simple stone frieze.
