Church of John Damascene
Church of John of Damascus
Overview:
• The Church of "John of Damascene" is located in "Shakib Arslan" Street, which is located between the "Nora" parking lot and the "Hospitality Palace".
• The story of its construction coincided with one of the biggest sectarian conflict that took place in Damascus which is the conflict of 1860.
• This church was built during the time of the Antiochian Patriarch Erotheos (1850-1885 AD) on land that was previously a house for the Russian Consulate in Damascus, which it sold to the Ottoman government after it had moved to another location.
• This church is considered one of the most beautiful orthodox churches in Damascus, if not the most beautiful at all. It is one of the distinguished spiritual, archaeological and tourist attractions in its location, style of architecture, and beauty of its interior architecture. It is intended for visitors to the Mary Cathedral, which is only about fifty meters away from it.
