Overview:
• The Zaitoun Church or the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Dormition is the first religious tourist station and the most famous church in Syria, whose construction dates back more than 150 years. It is also the largest, most beautiful, and most elegant of the royal Catholic churches in the world, and the closest to Byzantine ecclesiastical art.
• It is located in Al-Zaitoun neighborhood on the eastern side of the city, close to its Bab Sharqi and the city walls.
• Al-Zaitoun Church or the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Dormition for the Melkite Greeks in Damascus, is the seat of the Diocese of Damascus for the Melkite Greek Catholics.
• The age of this church goes back to the beginning of the founding of the Melkite Roman Catholic sect in the East, which started from Damascus.
• This church is known among the people of Damascus as the Zaitoun Church, due to the large number of olive trees in the courtyard of this cathedral church, which was once present in it.
