The Battle of Maysalun

Overview:

• A battle that took place between the Syrian volunteer forces and the French army, on the morning of Dhu al-Qi'dah 8, 1338 AH / July 24, 1920 AD.

• A number of Damascus figures participated in the “Maysalun Battle,” the most prominent of whom was “Muhammad Saeed Burhani,” the imam of Attaouba Mosque in Damascus and the sheikh of the Shadhili Tariqa.

The end of battle:

• The number of losses among the Syrian volunteer forces was estimated at 400 dead and 1,000 wounded. As for the French army's death toll, it is (according to French figures) 42 dead and 154 wounded.

• The French headed towards Damascus and entered it on the morning of the next day. Hashem al-Atassi's ministry resigned, while King Faisal moved his headquarters from Damascus to al-Kiswah, where he issued a royal decree to form a new ministry headed by Mr. Alaa al-Din al-Droubi.

• On July 27, General Gouraud issued a statement declaring martial law in the country, and issued a warning to King Faisal calling on him to leave Syria. He left Syria on July 29, 1920, heading to Daraa, then to Haifa, and from there to London.

• These events were a declaration of the end of the Arab government and then the monarchy, and the beginning of the new era, the era of colonialism.
