• The school was built according to a unique architectural style in 963 AH and was completed in 969 AH and renovated in 1360 AH.
• At the entrance to Al-Sabuniya school there is a room in which there is a mausoleum with an octagonal stone minaret with exquisite decorations. It was called Al-Sabuniyah in relation to the person who built it, Shihab Al-Din Ahmed bin Al-Sabuni.
Historic overview:
• Al-Sabuniya School is considered one of the facilities of the Mamluk era. Al-Khawajiki (the great rich merchant) bin Shihab Al-Din Al-Qadai bin Alam Al-Din bin Salim bin Muhammad Al-Bakri Al-Dimashqi, known for Al sabuni, established the school’s courtyard and the fountain in its middle.
• Al-Sabuniya is ancient and has endowment properties, in the villages of Ghouta Damascus and in Lebanon, and the Damascus Endowments Directorate is implementing a plan to restore it to remain a civilizational beacon to be added to many schools that were established in the Mamluk and Ayyubid eras, as well as in order to preserve the identity of Al Sabuniya school and its mosque, because it is considered a model unique architecture.
Architectural description:
• The mosque of the school consists of a main haram, a large courtyard with a pool of water, and two iwans, south and west, and the walls of the courtyard from the bottom are stone with a huge amazing front made of black and white marble stones. On the perimeter of the two iwans there is a small room that is currently closed, with a door and two windows overlooking the mausoleum room, and two others overlooking the mosque.
