The Arab Epigraphy Museum (Al Madrasa Al Djaqmaqia)
Overview:
• It is located in the Old Damascus area, north of the Umayyad Mosque, on "Al-Kallasah" Street, next to the tomb of "Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi".
Historic overview:
• The school was built by the teacher “Singer Al-Hilali” and his son “Shams Al-Din Al-Sayegh”, and it was called “Dar Al-Quran Al-Hilaliya”, then King “Al-Nasir Hassan” confiscated it in 761 AH, and built over it an office for orphans and made windows for it from the east, and after his death in 772 AH, it turned into a Sufi school.
• In 1919, it turned into a headquarters for the Mawlawi religious circle and teaching children the Holy Qur’an, until it was hit by a bomb during the Second World War in 1941 and the ceiling of its hall and the upper part of its walls were demolished after that. It was restored in 1972 and turned into a museum of Arabic calligraphy in 1974.
Architectural description:
• The school is considered one of the most beautiful schools in its decoration and design, and it bears the features of Mamluk architecture in terms of architecture, decoration and design, and is a complete model of Mamluk architecture.
