Al-Hariqah Market

About the place

Al-Hariqah Market

Overview:

• Al-Hariqah is located between Souk Al-Hamidiya and Souk Medhat Pasha, between Al-Darwishiya Avenue in the west and Al-Khayyaten market in the east.

• It was called the neighborhood of Sidi Amoud, after the governor, Sidi Ahmed Amoud, who was buried there.

Historic overview:

• It is one of the most luxurious and oldest neighborhoods in Old Damascus, as it had the most famous houses of Damascene families known at that time.

• When the Syrian revolution against the French occupation of Syria erupted in 1925, French artillery and aircraft bombed the Sidi Amoud neighborhood with a group of residential neighborhoods in Damascus until fire broke out and spread throughout it and completely destroyed it. Only Bimaristan al-Nuri survived, and after the fire was extinguished, the urban fabric of this neighborhood was destroyed, and this neighborhood was called al-Hariqah, which still bears this name to this day.

 • As a result of the importance of the commercial market of Al-Hariqah for the Syrians, the Damascus Chambers of Industry and Commerce were built near it, those buildings located near the Gold Market. This commercial proximity to the official buildings gave the place more importance than the rest of the markets in Damascus.

• Al-Hariqah market usually does not know a specific season. The movement of people is active on any day, any month, and perhaps any season. The number of traders in this market is estimated between 3000 and 4000 traders. Al-Hariqah is the first place in Damascus that has straight and cross streets.
