Sabil al-Khazneh

Overview:

• It is located at the beginning of Medhat Pasha market in the cotton market in the district of Al-Khudayria in the Al-Shaghour neighborhood within the walls of the old city of Damascus.

Historic overview:

• It is one of the sabil whose construction date is unknown, but the Director of Antiquities of Damascus has placed a marble plaque next to the sabil, which states: “Sabil al-Khazneh was established by Emir Seif al-Din Jarkas, in the year 807 AH.”

• Based on the foregoing, we conclude that the date of the establishment of this sabil was in the Mamluk era in the year 807 AH / 1404 AD.

• Al-Shihabi mentioned in the written inscriptions in the city of Damascus that the emir did not build it, but rather renovated it in the Mamluk era, based on what was mentioned in the stone inscription with the Thuluth calligraphy (the Mamluk Naskh) engraved in the front of the sabil.

Architectural description:

• The sabil has a black-white wall, topped by a muqarnas arch, its height is about three meters, the height of the opening of the arch is about 230 cm, and the full width of the sabil is about three meters.

• In the center of the sabil there is the inscription of the renovator of the sabil.
