Hammam Al Azm Palace

Al Azm Palace Bath

Overview:

• This bathroom belonged to "Assad Pasha Al-Azm" during his rule and his accession to "Damascus" in 1744 AD. This bathroom is different from the bathrooms in the market, as it is a private bathroom for "Assaad Pasha" and his family only.

Historic overview:

• “Al-Azm Palace” bath is the only bathroom located in a house, palace or any residential place in the historical city of “Damascus”, where it was customary for the city’s residents to allocate a day for bathing in the “bathroom of the market”, and this is an important note on the luxury of “Al-Azm family.” who live in this country. This is an important note of the luxury of "Al Azm family" who lived in this country.

• The bathroom inside was destroyed, like the rest of the palace, as a result of the French bombing of “Damascus” in 1925, and the French themselves restored it, in addition to the Aga Khan Foundation, and insisted not to return the old stones to it. Colonialism destroyed the great hall of the hammam and part of the "Salamlik", as they reconstructed it again with materials that appear modern, and on top of it is limestone.

Architectural Description:

• The bathroom is an architectural masterpiece in its shape, and one who enters it can imagine the state of luxury and prosperity that the people of the palace lived in. The bathroom has decorations and inscriptions on the walls and floors that are worthy of being in the palace halls prepared for grand receptions.

• The outer hall looks like one of the important palace halls with its decoration, furniture and windows, in addition to the bathroom's view of the beautiful courtyards of the palace, as it is not located in a far corner.

• The bathroom consists of three sections, and it is a miniature model of the public market bathrooms spread in the city of "Damascus" and the Islamic world.

• There are also individual compartments for the bathroom for those who do not like to shower collectively.

• As for the bathroom floor, it is made of stone and decorated and colored like the rest of the halls. The decoration of the floors is called "Al-Mushqaf" because they place the stones in an unspecified way until it gives an unexpected design in the end, whether it is marble or stone.
