The National Evangelical School

Overview:

• The people of "Homs" gave it several names:

- The school was called "The English" because it was the only school that taught some subjects of the curriculum in English.

- It is also called the "Red Cross" hospital, as after the British occupied the building, they put the red cross sign on the pyramidal roof of the secondary school.

- It was called the school of the teacher "Hana" in reference to its national founder, the scholar "Hana Khabbaz".

Historic overview:

• During its long history, which exceeded a century and a half of time, it graduated many students of science, from the people of the Syrian governorates, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine and Iraq.

• It is one of the oldest Syrian evangelical secondary schools - the former National College - and there is no known private educational institution in the country that preceded it historically and is still in existence today.

• It was established by the American Evangelical Mission in 1855 AD as an elementary school with a national administration in the Evangelical Church's estate in "Bustan Al-Diwan" neighborhood.

• A school for girls was attached to it in 1870 AD, then it was developed nationally and without foreign assistance into an internal secondary school in 1905 AD, and its new buildings were built in the “Bab Al Sebaa’” neighborhood with a national effort in 1907 AD, Professor “Hanna Khabbaz” took over its management, and its graduates were accepted at the American University in Beirut without an entrance exam.

• The star of the National College continued to rise, and its students were not only Syrian citizens, but also from neighboring countries such as Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq. The study was mixed for males and females, with an internal section for males, and this section continued until 1965 AD.

• During World War II, the British army seized the college buildings, and set up a military hospital and an officers' club there.

• After the independence of Syria, the National College resumed its mission. At that time, it was not allowed to name a college except for branches of education in the university, so its name was changed to "National Evangelical High School", indicating its ownership.

• The development and modernization of some works began in the secondary school since 1999.

• The area of the school building is about four thousand square meters, on two floors, with a courtyard for each section.

• In 2001, the Ministry of Education authorized the "evangelical" secondary school to teach co-education at all levels.

• A large number of its students are among the top students at the governorate and country levels in the basic and secondary education certificates.

• Success rates among students reached 99% during the past four years in the basic education stage, and 94% in the secondary stage.
