The Great Mosque of Hama
Al Jamea Alkabir
Overview:
• It is called "Al Jamea Ala’la - The Supreme Mosque" or "Al Jamea Alkabir - The Great Mosque" because of its large area.
• It extends along the Medina neighborhood, southwest of the Hama Castel.
Historic overview:
• It was originally a Roman temple to "Jupiter", which the Byzantines turned into a church after their conversion to Christianity, and "Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah" turned it into a mosque when "Hama" was opened. The Abbasid Caliph “Al-Mahdi” added to it and improved it, as “Al-Malik Al-Muzaffar Al-Ayyubi” improved it, and he built a school next to it.
• The entire mosque was demolished in accidents in 1982 AD and “Katbagha” minbar and the tombs of two Ayyubid rulers were destroyed. However, this mosque was reconstructed in 1990 AD almost as it was in the past, and the tombs of the two kings was replaced by a simple tomb, and the minbar was replaced by a small one.
