Overview:
• The “Firdaws School” is located in “Al-Firdaws neighborhood”, this neighborhood was known in ancient city of “Aleppo” as a cultural neighborhood that was full of educational and intellectual movement seven hundred and fifty years ago.
Historic overview:
• This complex was established by the Queen "Dayfa Khatun" and made it a school in the year 633 AH / 1235 AD, and it had a group of readers, jurists and Sufis, and a zawiya for teaching the noble hadith.
• The school later had several additions, renovations and changes that included many parts of the school.
• “Al-Firdaws School” was registered in the register of archaeological buildings and historical sites in the city of “Aleppo” by Resolution 157/A dated 31/12/1968.
• The building is of great importance historically, architecturally and technically, as well as it has an important cultural role, as it has been, through the ages, a main source and a center for research and science.
Architectural Description:
• This building is characterized as being the first complex in the Islamic world that includes several buildings with multiple functions (mosque, school, grave, ribat, zawiya).
• The building is designed to suit the dry climate in the city of "Aleppo" as it is one of the interior areas, and the spaces of the building are gathered around a heavenly space and in the middle of which there is a pool of water (the mosque and the two annexes), and this ensures a humid environment.
• The interior patios are tiled in black and white, and this ensures thermal balance.
• Thick stone walls maintain internal temperatures and prevent rapid heat exchange between inside and outside, while covering with domes reduces the exposure of surfaces to the sun.
• The school is distinguished by its wonderful mihrab with the colors of its graceful distinctive stones and the capitals of its columns which are some of which are adorned by the soft leaves of plants, and its octagonal pool of the Ayyubid buildings and its short minaret as well as the columns of its hallway are high.
