Overview:
• It is located in the center of the ancient "Aleppo", on the opposite side of the western door of the Great Mosque, and only a small street separates them.
• A school that was of great importance in the past and has witnessed with the residents of "Aleppo" many of the events of history, victories and conquests, then it was neglected for a period of time and is now undergoing restoration and repair work in order to give it a worthy role in our modern age.
Historic overview:
• "Al Halawiyah" school was at the beginning a "cathedral." It is said that "Helena", the mother of "Constantine", was the one who built it. Then the cathedral was transformed into a mosque called Al-Sarrajen Mosque.
• When “Nur al-Din” ruled “Aleppo” he transformed the mosque into a religious school to teach the doctrine of “Abu Hanifa” and added to it an iwan and some rooms to host the jurists and finished it in 1149 AD/544 AH, and this school was one of the most famous schools in “Aleppo”.
• It had a large number of students and its salaries were among the highest.
• As for naming the school “Al Halawiyah” with this name, it is from (Halwa), as it is narrated that “Nur Al-Din Mahmoud” used to fill the school’s basin with sweets and stuffed sweets, on the night of the twenty-seventh of Ramadan, and the school’s jurists gathered on it to eat it, the traveler "Ibn Jubayr" praised "Al Halawiyah" school and mentioned it in his book, as the Arab traveler "Ibn Battuta" mentioned it.
Architectural Description:
• In addition to its unique architectural character, "Al Halawiyah" school is distinguished by its impressive mihrab, which is considered one of the most beautiful Arab decoration.
• It is carved wood with carvings inlaid with ebony, ivory and mother-of-pearl. It has an inscription engraved with the handwriting of the historian of "Aleppo" "Ibn al-Adim". This mihrab was built by "Nur al-Din Zangi" in the twelfth century AD.
• "Al Halawiyah" school has been undergoing maintenance and restoration works for years in order to revive it.
