Historic overview:
The Al-Zahiriyah school was built during the golden age which was famous for the prosperity of the Ayyubid schools.
• It was built by Queen Dayfa Khatun, the wife of Al-Zahir "Ghazi" bin "Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi", who was the king of "Aleppo" in that era.
• Work began on building the school in 633 AH / 1235 AD, and finished in 634 AH / 1236 AD.
• In addition to being an ancient school, it included a mausoleum and a "khanqah" for travelers, as well as a band of vocalists and some jurists and mystics.
• Al-Zahiriyah Al-Barani school is considered one of the most beautiful schools in the Islamic world, and it was previously one of the most famous schools of Sharia sciences that teach jurisprudence according to the "Shafi'i" school of thought. Therefore, it was called the "Shafi'i" school.
• It is said that "Dayfa Khatun" has made the walls of the school very high in order to prevent noise from reaching the students of the school.
• Al-Zahiriyah school continued to teach the Qur’an and Sharia sciences for several years, then was neglected for a long period of time until the Ministry of Awqaf and Tourism, about three years ago, restored and rehabilitated it again to return to its golden age.
• It has now turned into an institute for the memorization of the Noble Qur’an within the plan of the Ministry of Endowments, and it includes among its walls hundreds of male and female students who are taught Islamic sciences of all kinds.
