Mar Elias Roman Orthodox Church

Overview:

The Mar Elias Maronite Church in Aleppo is located in the center of the famous Farhat Square.

Historic overview:

It is sometimes called the New Church of the Maronites. It was built in 1873 AD and was inaugurated by Bishop Youssef Matar in 1892 AD. It was built according to plans and architectural engineering coming from Rome, meaning that the engineers were Italians.

This church takes the character of a cathedral, ie the church of a bishop and metropolitan. It is the approved basis for the Maronite community in “Aleppo.” It is the oldest Maronite church in Aleppo, where all official ceremonies and baptisms take place.
