Aleppo National Museum

Overview:

• The museum is located in the Book Square behind the Central Bank and its main entrance is on the western side.

• The Aleppo Museum first was used as an Ottoman palace in 1931 AD.

• When that building was narrowed by the museum's antiquities, the archaeological authorities decided to build a new museum that meets the modern museum conditions. It was decided to demolish the Ottoman Palace (the headquarters of the museum) and build a new and modern museum in its place. That was in 1967 AD and it was opened in 1972 AD.

• Some of the antiquities of Tell Halaf formed the first nucleus of its exhibits. The entrance to the museum was decorated with a copy of the facade of the royal palace in Tell Halaf, which dates back to the ninth century BC.

Architectural description:

The museum contains sections:

1. Prehistoric Archeology Section: flint, bone and pottery tools and some plastic forms from the earliest times until the Copper Stone Age were displayed.

2. The Department of Syrian Antiquities from the Eastern Era: It is divided into three wings.

3. Classical Syrian Antiquities Department: the pieces were displayed according to their chronological and historical sequence, ie the Greek antiquities, followed by the Roman and Byzantine antiquities, in addition to some statues from the Achaemenid and Parthian periods.

4. Department of Arab and Islamic Archeology: This department was established in 1975 AD.
