Queiq River

About the place

Queiq River

Overview:

• The river was called in the old "the holy river" and it was forbidden to catch fish in it, and in the Roman era the "Romans" called the river "Calis".

• As for the current name "Queiq", it was said to be a diminutive of "qaq", which is the well-known bird.

• It was said that the word “Queiq” is a distortion of “Qawaq” and not a diminutive of “Qaq”, which means “Qawaq” may be one of the words used now by the Arabs of the Badia, which are not included in the language dictionaries, because the Arabs of the Badia call the stream of rainwater in the desert “Qawaq” .

• The river is also called "Aleppo River", and its source is in Anitab (Gaziantep).

• The total length of the river is 129 km, of which 110 km is in the Syrian lands and flows into the Al-Mafakh area.

• The river has two exits, between it and “Aleppo” twenty-four miles, one of which is in the village of “Al-Hussainiya” near “Azaz” and the other is springs from “Anitab” and some of its villages. The two rivers meet and become one river, flowing to Dabiq and passing through Aleppo.
