Khan Al Saboun
Overview:
• Khan al-Saboun is located on the northern side of the old city and east of the Umayyad Mosque, between the soap market and the goldsmith market (El Sagha Market).
• It is an old commercial khan, which, along with other khans, played an important economic and social role in the city of "Aleppo" through its commercial activities and its reception of merchant caravans coming from different regions.
• It was called “Khan Al Saboun” because it included shops for buying and selling soap, or perhaps because it is close to the neighboring soap market.
Historic overview:
• Khan al-Saboun was built about 400 years ago, that is, at the beginning of the sixteenth century AD, and it was built by Prince "Azdmar bin Yazid".
Architectural description:
• The khan includes about 60 shops and consists of two floors. The ground floor is used as shops for the sale and purchase of various goods such as threads, fabrics, a library and others, while the upper one is used as warehouses and sewing shops.
• The external facade is considered the most important aspect of the khan, rather the most beautiful facade of the Mamluk khan, due to its great richness with floral and geometric decorations and inscriptions.
• There is a Sabil which was established by Prince "Azdmar bin Mazid" is located to the right of the door of the Khan. It was renewed during the Ottoman era by the governor of Aleppo, "Rajab Pasha" in the year 1132/1719 AD.
