Khan Al Jumrok
Overview:
• "Khan Al-Jumruk" is considered one of the largest and most important Khans of ancient "Aleppo" in terms of architectural form and economic importance.
• "Khan Al-Jumrok" is located in "Sweiqat Ali".
• According to the chief merchants of the khan that the reason for calling it "Khan Al Jumrok" is because it was a center for customs clearance of goods.
Historic overview:
• It was built by "Ibrahim Pasha Khan Zada Muhammad Pasha" in 1547 AD.
• The basic function of Khan al-Jumrok is wholesale fabrics, as many types of fabrics are distributed in its shops, the most important of which are fabrics manufactured for curtains, furnishings and all their accessories which is meant for fabric merchants and ordinary customers from all regions inside and outside Syria.
Architectural description:
• It includes 50 underground stores and 77 upper stores, and on its gate, there is a spacious hall containing four stores that were designated for the residence of the English Consul.
• There is a stable above Caesarea containing 23 stores, and it was known as the Great Khan or by the name of its famous builder the former Sadr "Ebrahim Khan Zada".
• It has two beautiful markets made of carved stone with 10 domes for lighting. They have 344 shops, a mosque and a grandiose entrance crowned with domes.
• "Khan Al-Jumrok" is distinguished by its magnificent decoration of its entrance with its inscriptions on the outside of the khan and with the columns of the windows overlooking the interior of the khan.
