Amri Mosque

Overview:

At the forefront of Islamic monuments and antique mosques in Qena governorate comes one of the largest archaeological mosques in Upper Egypt, it is the “ancient Amri Mosque” in the city of Qus, which is located on the eastern coast of the Nile, south of Cairo, about 645 km away, and about 35 km away from Qena.

The Amri Mosque of Qus - according to the Egyptian researcher Dr. Khadija Faisal Mahdi - represents a religious, archaeological and historical value, as it is the oldest mosque in the city, so it is called the ancient mosque, and it is the largest of the area, with an area of four thousand square meters, and it accommodates more than three thousand worshipers. It is considered one of the rarest ancient hanging mosques, as its front façade is three meters off the ground, while its background is four meters high.

The importance of the Amri Mosque of Qus is represented in the cultural values that this mosque holds, as its historical value is represented in the date of its establishment, which dates back to the era of the Fatimid state. What increases its historical value is that it contains the oldest minbar in the Islamic world, which dates back to the year 550 AH during the reign of al-Salih Tala'a.
