Great Umayyad Mosque

Overview:

• The establishment of the Great Mosque goes back to the first century AH, during the Umayyad era.

• It was established on the ruins of the Byzantine Church, and the mosque is considered one of the largest mosques that were established in the Lebanese city of Baalbek.

Architectural description:

• It extends to about sixty meters in length and fifty meters in width.

• The mosque is adorned from the inside with thirty columns that were transported from the Roman temples located near the Baalbek Citadel. Its parts are also adorned with Corinthian crowns, which were made of granite.

• The mosque is similar in its design to the Umayyad Mosque in the city of "Damascus", as it contains the large areas that are adorned with columns, in addition to the square minaret, which resembles the war tower in its design.

• The height of its walls is about eight meters, which is decorated with inscriptions and decorations that express the Mameluke era.

• The mosque was demolished and neglected for several years, but it was restored again to make it available for religious rituals.
