Grand Phare
Overview:
Grand Lighthouse is one of the most beautiful tourist areas in Jijel, where many people come to spend fun times enjoying the turquoise waters and clean air. This lighthouse belongs to the Algerian National Office of Maritime Signals and its importance lies in guiding ships to the right path and sending various signals to maritime navigation.
Historic overview:
The lighthouse is one of the 24 lighthouses on the coast of Algeria. It was completed in 1867 AD on the summit of “Griffat”. It was built by the French sculptor, “Charles Salva,”. He used to work as a contractor and sculptor, and he used blue stone from El Aouana to build it, and this achievement cost him huge sums of money.
The reason that made the French colonialists built this lighthouse is due to the Roman ruins that were found in that place, as some accounts state that the Romans were setting fire every evening in order to direct and illuminate the ships in order to avoid colliding with the dangerous rocks in the open sea, including the two rocks “Al Madfaa” and “mqaed alqbayl”.
