Tomb of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent

Overview:

The heart and bowels of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent were buried at the tent in which he died in the year (1566 AD) during the siege of the castle in Zigetvar, where a monument was erected later that was preserved by the Hungarians after they regained the castle in the year (1664 AD), but an Austrian officer ordered its destruction in the year (1693 AD). This area called the Turkish cemetery has been respected by the Hungarians for centuries.

In this spot, in the year (1994 AD), a monument to the Great Sultan was erected after transforming the area into a garden of Hungarian-Turkish friendship.

In this city is the mosque of Sultan Suleiman and his minaret, Petra, which was struck by a lightning bolt in the middle of the eighteenth century, so they had to demolish two-thirds of its length, and 35 steps of stairs remained.

Current location:

In order to know the location of the tomb in which Sultan Suleiman's heart and bowels were buried, the Turkish and Hungarian governments funded in (2014 AD) a research project conducted by Dr. Nobert Pap, Head of the Department of Political Geography and Regional and Development Studies at the Hungarian University of Pecs. The project relied on examining old documents and maps, and using computer simulations to reimagine the place.

Among the documents, there was a testimony of a person, describing the location of the shrine and its location in detail, and then the team was guided to the place on top of a vineyard hill.

When the research team began digging at the top of a vineyard near the village of Turbékpuszta, they found an Ottoman tile. The researchers used software to convert rubble density data into detailed maps, and they were able to discover a small settlement built around the tomb, with between 400 and 500 people living there.
