Ellis Island

Overview:

Ellis Island is located at the top of New York Bay with an area of about 27 acres (11 hectares).

The Island is about 1 mile (1.6 km) southwest of Manhattan Island, New York City, and about 1,300 feet (400 meters) to east of New Jersey Shore.

Ellis Island was inaugurated in 1892 as a federal immigration station, and was closed in 1954.

This island has attracted many immigrants who recently have arrived, including about 40 percent of all current US citizens.

The reasons that attracted immigrants at the time and made them leave their homes in the old world due to war, drought, famine and religious persecution, are represented in having greater opportunity in the new world.

Ellis Island remains a central destination for millions of Americans seeking to learn about their country's history and their family's stories in many cases.
