Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa
Overview:
The construction of Kom al-Shoqafa Catacombs in the area which is bearing the same name in Karmouz region, west of Alexandria, dates back to the second century AD in the Roman era, as a witness to the examples of funerary architecture at that time.
The catacombs were so named because of the large number of pottery remains that were accumulating in the place.
It is considered one of the most important archaeological catacombs that are found in Alexandria, due to its wide area and the large number of inscriptions and decorations in it. It contains in its design the blending of ancient Pharaonic art with the spirit of Roman art to produce decorations that are characteristic of Alexandrian architecture at that time.
The catacombs were found by chance on September 28, 1900 A.D. Although excavations had begun in this area since 1892, but it was not found until the year 1900 AD.
