Okash Mosque

Overview:

The historical Okash Mosque located in the Commercial area in Jeddah, it was named after Akash Abaza who restored and renewed the Mosque.

Historic Overview

The historians disagreed about the date of its construction, according to the panel upon the mosque’s doors it was built in 1200A.H, there is an ottoman document that proves that the mosque was built in 1188. The mosque’s construction was ordered by Akash Abaza ; a rich man who was unjustly  imprisoned in ottoman era, his jailer is from (Hazazi) ,Okasha Abaza promised him if released that he would build a mosque and facilities which its proceeds go back to (Hazazi).

Architectural description:

It was built on ground elevated above street level with five wooden doors and circular domes decorated with Islamic inscriptions.

Located in the Commercial area in Jeddah and It is surrounded by commercial stores and its proceeds is dedicated to restore the mosque, it was restored in 1864 and the last restoring was in 1977.

The mosque is in good condition and regular prayers are held in it even today.
