Princes' Islands

Overview:

They are known at Arabs as Princes' Islands and also known as Kızıl Adalar “The red island “. 

Princes' Islands are islands that are located in the Sea of Marmara, in Istanbul, it takes 1 hour and half from the center of the city to reach the islands.  

They contain large and very small islands. The islands cover a total of 15.85 km2. 

During the Byzantine period, princes, sultans and kings were exiled on the islands, giving the islands their present name. They were taken by the Ottomans in 1453.

The Princes' Islands are the first destinations during the summer but in winter, it is difficult to reach the islands, in addition to the biting cold.

Büyükada Island is the biggest island, it not only has the main commercial center of the city, also has natural forests and it is also home for wealthy families. 

They consist of nine main islands:

Büyükada Island: the Biggest Island with an area of 5.46 km2 and considers one of the most famous islands. 

Heybeliada Island: "Saddlebag Island"with an area of 2.4 km2.

Burgazada Island: "Fortress Island”with an area of 1.5 km2.

Kınalıada Island:"Henna Island" with an area of 1.3 km2.

Sedef Adası Island:"Mother-of-Pearl Island” with an area of 0.157 km2.

Yassıada Island:"Flat Island" with an area of 0.05 km2.

Sivriada Island: "Sharp Island" with an area of 0.05 km2.

Kaşık Adası Island: "Spoon Island" with an area of 0.006 km2.

Tavşan Adası Island: "Rabbit Island"with an area of 0.004 km2.
