Saint Anne Church

Anne Kilisesi

Overview:

The Church of St. Anne which was established in the ninth century and is now permanently closed, is a relic of the Byzantine period in Trabzon.

Historic overview:

Saint Anne Church is the oldest church in Trabzon and attracts many Arab and foreign travellers from various sides, as it is one of the favourite tourist places for tourists visiting the Turkish destination of Trabzon.

Historical stories said that the church was built during the sixth or seventh century A.D., a plaque above the door of the church writes that “Saint Anne's Church” was rebuilt during the ninth century AD, exactly in the years 884 and 885 AD by the two monarchs (Leo VI and Alexander).

In the year 1461 AD, the church was transformed into a mosque after the Islamic conquest in the fifteenth century AD, and in 1923 AD the frescoes that were decorating the building were destroyed and then closed to preserve it as a heritage, but it is interesting to see it from the outside.

Architectural description:

The design of "Saint Anne's Church" was based on a beautiful architecture that appeals to the traveller, as its walls were built of solid gravel, which increases the aesthetics of the building as a tourist place in Trabzon.
