Archaeological Jerash

Overview:

• “Archaeological Jerash” is located to the north in the city of Uhud Rafidah. It is currently a heap of sand and stones surrounded by a special wall supervised by the Ministry of Education.

• The site is characterized by being rectangular in shape, and it extends along the site from south to north archaeological hills, whose density is concentrated in the middle, and on the eastern side there are walls with large rocks, and the size of the walls is similar to the site and its construction method to what is found in the “Al Okhdood” site in Najran.

• The most prominent thing that remains is there is one piece on either side of a "millstone" that was used by the inhabitants of the ancient city of "Jerash", and it is a very huge piece of ancient fiery rocks. There is no doubt that human effort, whatever it was, would not move that millstone, and perhaps it was managed by very strong animals such as horses, cows, camels, and others.

Historic overview:

• “The city of Jerash” dates back to pre-Islamic history, and the pilgrims from Yemen passes through it.

• It became famous with the Prophet’s mission as an important commercial center, and its people embraced Islam during the era of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace.

• It contains monuments and inscriptions dating back to the pre-Islamic period and the successive Islamic periods. It was famous for its leather and war industries, so it was known for its catapults and tugs, which are known as tanks at the present time.

• It also includes the remnants of the architectural style left by the Yishkurians, represented by the huge floral stones that were used in the building.
