Billingsgate Market
Overview
Located in the east of London, the market is for wholesale, and is open to the public. Entry isn’t allowed for children under 12.
History
Billingsgate was originally a market for corn, coal, iron, wine, pottery, fish and other foods. It turned into a fish market during the 16th and 17th centuries but wasn’t formally established until an Act of Parliament in 1699.
It takes its name from Billigsgate, a ward in the south-east city of London. Due to the increasing trade, the fish market was relocated in 1982 to a new 13-acre (53,000 m2) building complex on the Isle of Dogs in Poplar, close to Canary Wharf.
How to get there
You can easily go to Billingsgate via the subway or the train and then go down in Canary Wharf station. It is a 10-minute walk from the subway. You can also take bus number 277 or D8.
