Gangaramaya Temple is one of the top temples in Colombo that's a mix of modern architecture and culture of china, thailand, india, and sri lanka. Gangaramaya Temple is located near Beira Lake in Colombo.
Historic overview
The temple was built in the 19 century by a famous merchant named Don Bastian (de Silva Jayasuriya Goonewardane, Mudaliyar),who was seeking suitable land to build a temple for the Matara Sri Dharmarama thero. Today Gangaramaya serves as a place of Buddhism worship and a learning centre.
The temple has many facilities such as an elderly care center, an orphanage, and a school. The temple also has been instrumental in establishing Buddhism through the Buddhist Center in New York and the Buddhist Center in Tanzania.
