Namiseom Island (Nami Island)

Overview:

• Namiseom or Nami Island is a small island shaped like a half-moon.

• Namiseom is located 3.8 km from the English county of Gapyeong, but belongs to Chuncheon in Gangwon-do. It covers an area of 430,000 square meters and is approximately 4 km in diameter.

• It is distinguished by its distinguished location, as it contains charming views, amazing roads full of trees, and is considered the first choice that attracts the world’s tourists.

• The location of this island represents the most filmed location for Korean dramas, as this island was a successful location for filming the drama “Winter Sonata”. There are many Korean tourist attractions in it, Nami is one hour away from the Korean capital, Seoul.

Historic overview:

• It was formed due to being inundated with increasing waters from the northern Han River as a result of the construction of the Cheongpyeong Dam (청평댐) in 1944 AD.

• In 1965 AD, 2000 trees were donated to Nami Island, including white pine, white birch, lavender, cherry, redwood, and Chinese ginkgo.

• Its name comes from General Nami - 남이장군, who died at the age of 28 after being falsely accused of treason during the reign of King Sejo, the seventh king of the Korean Joseon dynasty.

• Although his grave was not discovered, there were a pile of stones where his body was supposed to be buried. It was believed that if someone took even one stone from there, it would bring misfortune to their house. A tour company arranged the grave with soil and then developed Namiseom into an amusement park.
