Overview
• The Maison de Balzac is a writer's house museum paying tribute to the French novelist Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850).
• It is located in the 16th arrondissement in Paris, France.
Historic overview
• It is the house museum of "Balzac" in which he lived and worked between 1840 and 1847; in this house he wrote and depicts many of his novels and wonderful stories, including La Comedie humaine, La Rabouilleuse, Une ténébreuse affaire and La Cousine Bette and many other novels.
• It was acquired by the government of Paris in 1949, and has been turned into a museum.
• It one of the city's three literary museums, along with the Maison de Victor Hugo and the Musée de la Vie Romantique.
• Balzac's House is one of the 14 City of Paris' Museums that have been incorporated since January 1, 2013 in the public institution Paris Musées.
• Since 1971 the house's ground floor has contained a library of the author's manuscripts, original and subsequent editions, illustrations, books annotated and signed by Balzac, books devoted to Balzac, and other books and magazines of this period.
Architectural description
• In 2012, Balzac's House was renovated in order to meet current standards and now has a more modern appearance.
• Balzac's five-room apartment was located on the top floor, at three levels.
• The Maison de Balzac contains a library of the author's manuscripts, original writings, personal possessions, and many artistic paintings. The museum now contains Balzac's writing desk and chair.
How to get there
- To get to the museum you can take the subway to the nearest stations either Passy serving Line 6 or La Muette station serving Line 9.
- Take the RER train, then you would need line C heading to stop Bougainvilliers or the Radio France train station.
- Public buses of lines 32, 70, and 72 get to the museum.
