Overview
• The Place de la Bastille is a square in Paris where the Bastille prison stood until the storming of the Bastille and its subsequent physical destruction during the French Revolution.
• The square covers three municipalities within the city of Paris. The whole district is known as the Bastille, one of the most famous tourist destinations in France.
• The July Column (Colonne de Juillet) which commemorates the events of the July Revolution (1830) stands at the center of the square. The area also hosts other landmarks such as the Bastille Opera.
• The Place de la Bastille is currently hosting festivals and concerts, as well as celebrations of national and international events, and features many cafes, restaurants and nightclubs.
Historic overview
• The Bastille was built between 1370 and 1383 as part of the defenses of Paris during the Hundred Years' War.
• The structure was converted into a state prison in the 17th century. The rebels stormed it on July 14, 1789, the Bastille witnessed the first spark of the French Revolution. The prison was destroyed during the revolution.
