MuCEM- Museum of Civilizations of Europe and Mediterranean

MuCEM – Musée des civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée

Overview:

The first museum dedicated to the cultures of Mediterranean MuCEM was opened in 2013 as part of the celebrations of the European capitals with culture. This museum is considered the amazing icon of Marseille.

This magnificent museum explores the history, civilization and culture of the Mediterranean region through a number of anthropological and periodic art exhibitions.

The museum is distinguished by its unique and modern design. It is covered with panels of metal and speckled glass.

The decorative cement provides trimmings for the building which Ricciotti describes as a "vertical reed".

It costs 190 million euros (253 million dollars) and took 13 years of building. This museum is designed by the architect Rudy Ricciotti. The museum overlooks the sea and includes Fort Saint Jean, which is the first museum in the world dedicated to the heritage of the Mediterranean basin.
