Masjid Sidi Gaber
Overview:
Sidi Gaber Mosque is located in the neighborhood named after him, between the tram station and Port Said Street, facing Mustafa Kamel Military Hospital.
Historic overview:
The mosque was initially a small corner built around the middle of the seventh century AH, and this corner remained in its condition until a mosque was built on its ruins at the end of the nineteenth century AD, in 1955 AD. The old mosque was removed to build the current mosque in its place.
The most likely opinion is that Sidi Gaber is Gabir bin Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin Muhammad al-Ansari, and he is called Abu Ishaq. ... his lineage from his father's side is related to Saad bin Ubadah Al-Ansari, Sayed Al-Khazraj.
Sheikh Gaber Al-Ansari grew up in Andalusia, then travelled to Fes in the country of Morocco, then moved to Tripoli, Libya, then came to Cairo and was a guest of one of his cousins, whose nickname is Abu Al-Abbas. He was a Sufi man, so Gaber Al-Ansari joined him and learned from him. When Sheikh Abu Al-Abbas died, Sheikh Abu Ishaq Gaber Al-Ansari moved to Alexandria and built a corner for him in Dahiyat Al-Raml, (Later it turned to the current mosque) and the sheikh continued to reside in that corner until he died in 697 AH, exceeding his ninety years of age.
Architectural description:
The present mosque consists of a square with a covered courtyard in its middle and surrounded by corridors on all sides, while the courtyard of the mosque is covered with a high ceiling from the rest of the mosque's roof and windows for lighting were opened at this height.
The mosque has three doors or entrances.
There is the shrine of Sidi Gaber Al-Ansari on the southern side of the mosque.
